Global OLED Display Market Scale and Long-Term Growth
Omdia estimates reproduced in LG Display’s fiscal-year 2023 Form 20-F place the global OLED panel industry at 790 million units and US$42 billion in revenue in 2023. The same source estimates 188 million units and US$7 billion in 2012, making the two-year points useful for describing long-term expansion, not a complete annual series.
| Global panel measure | 2012 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| OLED panel sales volume | 188 million | 790 million |
| OLED panel market revenue | US$7 billion | US$42 billion |
| TFT-LCD panel sales volume | 2,706 million | 2,456 million |
| TFT-LCD panel market revenue | US$92 billion | US$73 billion |

The OLED revenue mix was concentrated in mobile products in 2023. Small panels for mobile devices represented approximately 89% of global OLED industry revenue, a revenue share rather than a unit share.
Size-based panel data also show different market behavior. Omdia estimated that the market for panels 9 inches or larger contracted from US$66 billion in 2022 to US$61 billion in 2023, while the market for panels 9 inches or smaller declined from US$56 billion to US$55 billion.
| Panel size population | 2022 market | 2023 market | Average selling price change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 inches or larger | US$66 billion | US$61 billion | US$74 to US$76, about +3% |
| 9 inches or smaller | US$56 billion | US$55 billion | US$25 to US$20, about -5% |
The averages cover all panels in each defined size population, including OLED and non-OLED products; they are not OLED-only retail prices. The source for these size, revenue and price estimates is the LG Display Form 20-F.
OLED Display Sizes, Applications and Product Coverage
OLED panels span smartphones, televisions, monitors, automotive systems and other applications, so a total panel statistic should not be treated as a television or monitor statistic. LG Display reported 104.4 million display panels sold across its products in 2023, but its filing does not identify every unit as OLED.
LG Display’s television-panel range covered 21.5-inch to 98-inch diagonals in the 2023 filing. That is a product range, not a distribution of sales by size.
Production milestones illustrate how the application base developed. LG Display began plastic OLED production at AP3 in August 2017 and at AP4 in July 2019; it completed AP5 construction in Paju in February 2024 and subsequently began mass production of medium-sized panels, without quantifying AP5 output.
Company context also extends beyond pure panel categories. LG Display’s automotive business accounted for 9% of company revenue in 2023, compared with 7% in 2022, but automotive revenue is not wholly OLED revenue.
OLED Manufacturing Capacity and Investment Trends
LG Display’s investment announcements show the scale of capital required to expand OLED production. The company announced up to KRW3.3 trillion for the Paju P10 complex in 2021, mainly for small- and medium-sized OLED panels.
Earlier announcements included KRW7.8 trillion in 2017, mainly for new large-sized and plastic OLED lines in Paju, followed by an additional KRW3.0 trillion for new large-sized OLED lines in 2019. These are announced investment amounts, not necessarily fully realized annual spending.
| Manufacturing indicator | Reported figure | Period or status |
|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou OLED joint-venture investment | Approximately KRW7 trillion | Cumulative through December 31, 2023 |
| LG Display ownership of Guangzhou venture | 70% | December 31, 2023 |
| Guangzhou government ownership | 30% | December 31, 2023 |
| Smartphone OLED capacity | 30,000 to 45,000 panels/month | During 2023 |
LG Display’s Form 20-F reports approximately KRW7 trillion invested in the Guangzhou joint venture through December 31, 2023. The ownership percentages describe the venture, not production shares.
The manufacturing transition also included a closure: LG Display closed its P7 TFT-LCD television-panel facility in December 2022. That operational milestone helps explain the company’s changing OLED/LCD mix but does not quantify OLED output.
LG Display’s OLED business generated 48% of company revenue in 2023. Management expected that share to reach the mid-50% range in 2024; this is a forecast disclosed in the 2023 filing, not a reported 2024 outcome.
OLED Television Sales, Market Share and Pricing
Samsung reported 1.01 million OLED-TV units sold globally in 2023 and 1.44 million in 2024. Its reported OLED-TV market share rose from 22.7% in 2023 to 27.3% in 2024, while company-reported unit sales increased 42% year over year.
| Samsung global OLED-TV measure | 2023 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Company OLED-TV sales | 1.01 million | 1.44 million |
| Reported global OLED-TV market share | 22.7% | 27.3% |
Source: Samsung Electronics numéro 1 mondial des téléviseurs depuis 18 ans. Samsung attributes the market figures to Omdia; the release does not further define the share basis, and company sales are not total global OLED-TV shipments.
Samsung also reported a 4.6-percentage-point year-over-year increase in OLED-TV market share in 2024. Adjacent premium-TV figures should not be mislabeled as OLED: Samsung held 60.5% of the global premium-TV segment priced above US$2,500 in 2023, 33.9% of TVs 75 inches and larger, and 30.4% of TVs above 90 inches.
QLED provides additional premium-display context but is a comparison category. Samsung reported 8.31 million QLED-TV units sold in 2023 and cumulative QLED-TV sales above 40 million units from launch through 2023, covering 2017–2023.
OLED Monitor Adoption and Gaming-Market Position
Samsung’s 2023 OLED-monitor disclosures distinguish revenue share from unit share. The company reported 34.7% of global OLED-monitor revenue and 28.3% of global OLED-monitor unit sales, both attributed to IDC-based market estimates.
| Global OLED-monitor measure | Samsung reported share | Basis and period |
|---|---|---|
| OLED-monitor market | 34.7% | Revenue, 2023 |
| OLED-monitor market | 28.3% | Unit sales, 2023 |
| Gaming-monitor market | 20.8% | Revenue, cited 2023 disclosure |
Source: Samsung Electronics numerem 1 na globalnym rynku monitorów OLED. Revenue and unit shares describe different populations; Samsung’s page describes the 20.8% gaming-monitor figure as part of a five-year leadership claim without stating a narrower measurement window.
Product specifications add quantified context but are not adoption measures. Samsung’s first OLED monitor was a 34-inch Odyssey OLED G8; its 2024 G8 G80SD used a 32-inch 4K UHD panel at 240 Hz, while the G6 G60SD used a 27-inch QHD panel at 360 Hz.
The updated Odyssey OLED G9 G95SD used a 49-inch dual-QHD panel at 240 Hz. These specifications describe Samsung products rather than the size distribution of the global OLED-monitor market.
OLED Company Revenue, Volume and Panel-Price Data
LG Display’s company segment data show how revenue, units and average selling prices can move differently. Television-panel revenue fell 37.9%, from KRW6,975 billion in 2022 to KRW4,331 billion in 2023, while unit sales fell 52.6%, from 29.3 million to 13.9 million.
| LG Display television-panel measure | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | KRW9,466 billion | KRW6,975 billion | KRW4,331 billion |
| Unit sales | 30.2 million | 29.3 million | 13.9 million |
| Average selling price | KRW313,000 | KRW238,000 | KRW311,000 |
The television-panel average selling price increased 30.7% from KRW238,000 in 2022 to KRW311,000 in 2023, with the filing noting that a higher OLED mix contributed to the increase. The segment includes OLED and TFT-LCD panels, so the average is not an OLED-only price.
LG Display reported IT-panel revenue of KRW11,198 billion in 2022, down 10.1% from 2021. IT-panel units fell 19.0%, from 107.9 million in 2021 to 87.4 million in 2022, while average selling price rose 11.3%, from KRW115,000 to KRW128,000.
The IT segment includes notebook, desktop-monitor and tablet panels, with both OLED and non-OLED technologies. The source for these company segment figures is the LG Display Form 20-F.
Mobile-and-other-application revenue increased 3.1%, from KRW7,900 billion in 2021 to KRW8,146 billion in 2022, then reached KRW9,070 billion in 2023, an 11.3% increase. Units decreased 0.8%, from 103.1 million in 2022 to 102.3 million in 2023, while average selling price rose 12.7%, from KRW79,000 to KRW89,000.
These mobile-and-other figures include multiple applications and a rising OLED mix; they are company segment measures, not a global OLED-only series.
