Global LCD Panel Scale and Revenue Statistics

The global TFT-LCD series measures panels rather than finished monitors. According to the LG Display 2024 Form 20-F, global TFT-LCD panel sales were 2,426 million units in 2024, down from 2,706 million in 2012.

The same Omdia market-revenue series, cited by LG Display, places global TFT-LCD panel revenue at US$79 billion in 2024, versus US$92 billion in 2012. These figures describe the global TFT-LCD industry and should not be read as sales of retail monitors.

Global panel measure 2012 2024
TFT-LCD sales volume 2,706 million panels 2,426 million panels
TFT-LCD revenue US$92 billion US$79 billion
OLED sales volume 188 million panels 1,008 million panels
OLED revenue US$7 billion US$54 billion

The OLED figures are a comparator technology in the same cited series. They show OLED panel sales rising to 1,008 million units and US$54 billion in 2024 from 188 million units and US$7 billion in 2012; they are not LCD statistics and do not represent the entire display market.

LCD Display Size, Region and Application Data

Panel size is an important boundary in the market data. In 2024, panels at least 9 inches generated US$70 billion globally, up from US$61 billion in 2023, while panels smaller than 9 inches generated US$64 billion, up from US$57 billion.

The LG Display 2024 Form 20-F reports the following Omdia average selling prices across the defined panel populations:

Panel population 2023 revenue 2024 revenue Average selling price change
At least 9 inches US$61 billion US$70 billion US$75 to US$80, about +6%
Smaller than 9 inches US$57 billion US$64 billion US$21 to US$23, about +10%

The threshold is panel diagonal, not a finished-product category, and the smaller-than-9-inch group includes non-monitor applications. In the first half of 2024, the average LCD TV-panel size was 50.8 inches globally, an Omdia estimate reported by BOE, and it increased 1.5 inches from the first half of 2023.

Estimated 2024 revenue shares also differed by size. For panels at least 9 inches, Chinese manufacturers held 58%, Korean manufacturers 21%, Taiwanese manufacturers 16% and Japanese manufacturers 5%; these are revenue shares, not unit shares.

For panels smaller than 9 inches, Korean manufacturers held 47%, Chinese manufacturers 42%, Taiwanese manufacturers 6% and Japanese manufacturers 5%.

The AUO 2024 Annual Report reports that global display-industry panel shipment demand area increased 6% year over year in 2024. AUO projected a 5% increase for 2025, partly driven by IT replacement demand; this is a company outlook and forecast, not an observed 2025 result.

LCD Monitor and IT-Display Shipment Statistics

Company reporting helps show how broad the monitor category is. LG Display sold 115.2 million panels measuring at least 9 inches in 2024, but that total includes OLED and LCD panels across multiple applications rather than finished monitors alone.

LG Display’s IT-product panel revenue was KRW 9,420 billion in 2024, up 20.0% from 2023. The category includes monitors, laptops and tablets, so it should not be treated as an LCD-only monitor series.

LG Display category 2023 2024 Change or definition
IT-product panel units 78.2 million 81.6 million +4.4%
IT-panel average selling price KRW 100,000 KRW 116,000 +16.0%
IT-product panel revenue Not stated here KRW 9,420 billion +20.0% year over year
TV-panel units 13.9 million 20.5 million +47.5%
TV-panel average selling price KRW 311,000 KRW 291,000 -6.4%

All company figures in this table come from the LG Display 2024 Form 20-F. The TV category is included as a large-display comparator and has a mixed technology composition.

LG Display’s automotive-panel unit sales also increased from 17.4 million in 2023 to 19.7 million in 2024, a 13.2% increase. Automotive panels are another comparator rather than computer-monitor shipments.

LCD Display Manufacturing and Competitive Share Data

The AUO 2024 Annual Report cites Omdia shipment rankings for 2024. These are global shipment shares, so they are not directly interchangeable with revenue shares in the size-based comparisons above.

Application and manufacturer 2024 shipment share
Desktop-monitor panels: BOE 30%
Desktop-monitor panels: CSOT 19%
Desktop-monitor panels: LG Display 18%
Desktop-monitor panels: HKC 15%
Desktop-monitor panels: AUO 13%
Notebook panels: BOE 35%
Notebook panels: AUO 19%
Notebook panels: Innolux 18%
TV panels: BOE 27%
TV panels: HKC 24%
TV panels: AUO 18%

The rankings cover desktop-monitor, notebook and TV panels separately. They do not establish a single all-LCD manufacturer ranking, and the desktop-monitor figures are panel shipments rather than retail monitor sales.

The BOE 2024 performance release reports consolidated 2024 operating revenue of RMB 198.38 billion, up 13.66% year over year. BOE also reported approximately 140 million flexible-OLED panel shipments, about 7% of operating revenue invested in R&D, and more than 100,000 cumulative patent applications, with over 90% classified as invention patents; these are company-wide or OLED comparator measures rather than LCD-only manufacturing statistics.

Energy-Use Statistics for Certified LCD Monitors

ENERGY STAR’s live certified-results records provide model-level examples, not a representative average for every LCD monitor. The records were accessed on October 4, 2026, and the listed annual values are certification results for the named products in Canada.

The ENERGY STAR Displays Key Product Criteria states that its monitor TEC formula weights on-mode power at 35% and sleep-mode power at 65% over 8.76 hours-equivalent per year. The maximum TEC formula uses four screen-area bands: below 190, 190–209, 210–314 and at least 315 square inches.

ENERGY STAR also allows 2.9 kWh for full network connectivity and 2.75 kWh for USB-C power delivery in the monitor TEC requirement. These are certification allowances, not claims about typical electricity consumption.

The long-run panel series shows LCD remaining large while OLED expanded rapidly in the cited 2012–2024 comparison. Company revenue mix provides a separate view of transition, but it should not be mistaken for a whole-industry LCD market share.

According to LG Display Announces 2024 Annual Earnings Results, OLED products represented 55% of LG Display’s total revenue in 2024, up seven percentage points year over year, and 60% of revenue in the fourth quarter of 2024.

LG Display’s Q4 2024 revenue mix was 22% TV panels, 28% IT panels, 42% mobile and other panels, and 8% automotive panels. The categories sum to 100% of the company’s quarterly revenue mix and include multiple display technologies.

The company reported consolidated 2024 revenue of KRW 26.6 trillion and an operating loss of KRW 560.6 billion. Q4 2024 revenue was KRW 7,833 billion, 15% above Q3 and 6% above Q4 2023, while Q4 EBITDA profit was KRW 1,306 billion compared with KRW 1,162 billion in Q3.

These company financial figures describe LG Display’s consolidated business rather than LCD-only profitability. They are useful for understanding the commercial setting around LCD panels, OLED growth and application mix, but they do not measure consumer adoption of one display technology across all products.
