59 Display Panel Statistics on Markets, Technology, Applications and Sustainability

Display panels span television, computing, mobile devices and vehicles, so their statistics use several different denominators. This overview separates global forecasts, company-reported results, market-share estimates and broader monitor or e-waste measures by period and population.

Display Panel Market Shipments, Area and Growth

TrendForce’s global LCD TV panel forecast for 2024 illustrates why unit and area statistics should be read together. Shipments were projected at about 242 million panels, up 3.4% year over year, while shipment area was expected to increase 8.6% because larger screens require more panel area.

The same source reported a collective target of about 251 million LCD TV panels from panel makers for 2024. That target is a management objective, not a realized shipment count, while the 242 million figure is also a forecast rather than a final result. TrendForce, “LCD TV Panel Market Heads Toward Profitability and Fuels Increased Production”

Large-area OLED points to a faster-growing technology segment, although it uses a different market definition: panels above 9 inches. Omdia forecast shipments in this category to rise 124.6% year over year in 2024, with Chinese panel makers’ share forecast to increase from 11.8% in 2023 to 14.4% in 2024. Display Panel Industry Data by Region and Manufacturer

Revenue shares provide another view of the global 9-inch-and-larger display-panel market. LG Display’s filing, citing Omdia, reported the following 2024 shares; they are revenue shares, not unit shares.

Manufacturer location 2024 revenue share Scope
China 58% Global 9-inch-and-larger display panels
Korea 21% Global 9-inch-and-larger display panels
Taiwan 16% Global 9-inch-and-larger display panels
Japan 5% Global 9-inch-and-larger display panels

Company scale and innovation measures differ from market shares. BOE reported 2024 operating revenue of RMB198.38 billion, a 13.66% increase from 2023, and approximately 140 million flexible OLED panels shipped.

The company also said it invested about 7% of operating revenue in research and development.

BOE reported more than 100,000 independently filed patent applications cumulatively through its 2024 announcement. More than 90% were invention patents and more than 33% were filed overseas; these are company-reported applications, not granted patents. BOE, “BOE achieved impressive performance in 2024”

LG Display reported 2024 consolidated revenue of KRW26.615 trillion, up 25% year over year. Its operating loss was KRW560.6 billion, although the company reported that the loss narrowed by about KRW2 trillion year over year. LG Display Co., Ltd. Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024

LG Display’s product mix shows OLED’s importance within one manufacturer rather than an industry-wide OLED share. OLED products represented 55% of its 2024 revenue, an increase of 7 percentage points year over year, and reached 60% of revenue in the fourth quarter.

Its fourth-quarter 2024 revenue was KRW7.833 trillion, up 15% from the prior quarter and 6% from the fourth quarter of 2023. These company results sit alongside the broader Omdia forecast for rapid large-area OLED shipment growth, but the measures are not interchangeable: one is a company revenue mix and the other is a global shipment forecast.

The LCD TV outlook remains substantial in units. TrendForce’s 2024 forecast of 242 million LCD TV panels and its 8.6% area-growth estimate describe a mature, large-volume segment, while Omdia’s 124.6% large-area OLED growth forecast describes a smaller and faster-growing category.

Display Panel Applications Across TV, IT, Mobile and Automotive

LG Display reported the following 2024 segment revenues. The categories are company-defined, so they should not be treated as a complete industry application market.

LG Display application 2024 revenue Share or comparison
TV panels KRW5.973 trillion About 22.4% of consolidated revenue
IT panels KRW9.420 trillion About KRW3.447 trillion above TV
Mobile and other panels KRW8.942 trillion About 33.6% of consolidated revenue
Automotive panels KRW2.281 trillion About 8.6% of consolidated revenue

The percentage and difference figures are simple calculations from LG Display’s reported segment and total revenues, not independent market estimates. The filing also places the 2024 TV figure in a comparison table where it was 20% lower than the comparative 2025-table year; that context is a company segment comparison, not a market-wide decline. LG Display Co., Ltd. Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2024

Automotive demand has its own narrower measures. AUO’s 2024 annual report cited Omdia’s estimate that AUO held 15% of the automotive center-console panel market and ranked second in that specific category. AUO Corporation 2024 Annual Report

Display Panel Manufacturing, Investment and Operations

Environmental operating data reveal the resource intensity of panel manufacturing, but Samsung Display’s figures apply only to its stated reporting boundary and categories. In 2023, the company reported 4.094 thousand tonnes of location-based Scope 2 emissions, 4.807 GWh of total power usage and 17.864 GWh of other energy usage.

Samsung Display also reported 554.6 thousand tonnes of water usage in 2023. The disclosed categories included chilled, low-temperature chilled, deionized, domestic, sanitary and industrial wastewater categories. Samsung Display Sustainability Report 2024

Investment and intellectual-property figures show a different operational dimension. BOE’s approximately 7% R&D investment share, more than 100,000 cumulative patent applications and more than 33% overseas filing share describe company activity, while Samsung Display’s energy and water values describe resource use; neither set alone measures total industry efficiency.

Display Panel Energy, Waste and Recycling Statistics

ENERGY STAR states that certified monitors are on average 7% more energy efficient than standard options. The statement describes an average comparison across ENERGY STAR monitor products, not a controlled universal test of every monitor. ENERGY STAR Monitors

The U.S. Department of Energy’s FEMP guidance gives a 27-inch example: an ENERGY STAR monitor meeting the FEMP limit uses 52 kWh annually, compared with 72 kWh for a less-efficient comparison model. The example therefore saves 20 kWh per year, and the 52 kWh value is about 27.8% below 72 kWh; these are guidance examples rather than universal operating results. U.S. Department of Energy, “Purchasing Energy-Efficient Displays and Monitors”

Samsung Display’s 2023 waste figures were 0.211 tonnes of general waste, 20.304 tonnes of hazardous waste and 20.232 tonnes of recycled waste. Recycled waste was about 99.6% of the reported hazardous-waste quantity, calculated from those two company figures, but the categories may not represent perfectly identical operational populations. Samsung Display Sustainability Report 2024

The broader electronics context is much larger than display panels alone. The Global E-waste Monitor reported 62 million tonnes of global e-waste in 2022 and forecast 82 million tonnes by 2030, while documented collection and recycling was 22.3% in 2022 and projected to fall to 20% by 2030.

Small IT and telecommunications equipment generated about 4.6 million tonnes in 2022 and had a documented 22% collection and recycling rate. This category includes laptops, phones, GPS devices and routers, so it is broader than monitors or display panels.

The 2022 global e-waste material mix included about 17 million tonnes of plastics, approximately 14 million tonnes of composite materials and glass, and metals making up about half of total e-waste mass. These composition figures cover all e-waste categories, not display-only materials. ITU, “The Global E-waste Monitor 2024”
